Driving in New Zealand Information

You will find the following information extremely helpful when driving in Australia:

  • You must be 21 years of age
  • You must carry an English driving licence allowing you to driveor an International Driving Permit (IDP). However, a stay of over 12 months will require you to convert to a New Zealand licence
  • You DRIVE ON THE LEFT HAND SIDE OF THE ROAD. Anyone from the US or any other 'right hand side' country will have to adjust to this. You give way at all junctions to the right
  • Cars in New Zealand are right hand side drive, so be prepared or you may be shocked upon arrival!
  • If driving an English car, headlight converters are compulsory. As well as this, GB stickers are needed on the back of the car if your license plate doesn't have the 'European Union' flag with its circle of golden stars.
  • The speed limit in New Zealand is 50kmph in built up areas and 100kmph on the open roads. However, please be sure to look out and stick to signposts, as limits may vary.
  • New Zealand has stricter drive driving rules than the UK (0.5 mg/ml instead of 0.8) so we thoroughly recommend that you don't do it.
  • Carry all of your driving documentation with you, including your full UK driving license, vehicle insurance and registration.
